2018 December General Business Meeting

I-64/I-264 Interchange Improvements Update: The proposed project has been designed to address three existing deficiencies: safety, capacity and geometry.

  • Safety – By either reducing or eliminating freeway and ramp vehicle queues, the improvements will reduce the frequency and severity of crashes;
  • Capacity – The proposed improvements address two principal conflict points. The first is the ramp from westbound I-64 to eastbound I-264 – currently a single lane ramp that is to be widened to two lanes. The second is on eastbound I-264 where the mainline freeway lanes merge with the collector distributor road lanes. The project adds the capacity of another lane, increasing the total number of lanes exiting the merge area to five from four (excluding HOV lane);
  • Geometry – Consistent with FHWA guidance, weave sections will be removed from both the Newtown Road and Witchduck Road interchanges.
