Safe Transportation for Every Pedestrian (STEP) Program

Cost-effective countermeasures with known safety benefits can help reduce pedestrian fatalities at uncontrolled crossing locations and un-signalized intersections. With over 70% of pedestrian fatalities occurring at uncontrolled crosswalk locations, STEP suggests five countermeasures to increase pedestrian safety: Crosswalk visibility enhancements, raised crosswalks, pedestrian refuge islands, pedestrian hybrid beacons, and road diets.  https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/innovation/everydaycounts/edc_4/step.cfm?utm_content=&utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery
