During Halloween night (6 p.m. October 31 to 5:59 a.m. November 1) during the years 2017-2021, there were 159 people killed in drunk-driving crashes.**.

Hampton Roads, VA. (October 13, 2023) – This Halloween 2023, let’s make happy memories, not tragic nightmares.  The only thing scarier than zombies and witches loose on the streets is an impaired driver.  Over the 2022 Halloween weekend (Oct. 28-30), there were 1,171 traffic-related injuries & 12 fatalities on the Commonwealth’s roadways.*

Whether you are just celebrating the weekend with a few friends or attending a Halloween party, if you plan on using alcohol, never drink and drive -and never let a friend drive if they show signs of impairment.  Instead, use Drive Safe HR’s 757 Sober Ride powered by Lyft.

Free or reduced fare rides are being offered to alcohol-impaired drivers throughout Hampton Roads this Halloween Weekend.  Drive Safe Hampton Roads (DSHR) is sponsoring 757 Sober Ride from 4 p.m. on Friday, October 27th until 4:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 29th.  Note that you cannot reserve 757 Sober Ride or schedule a pickup in advance.  The 2-hour usage window begins when the rider enters the code in their app.

During the thirty-six-hour period, area residents age 21 and older celebrating with alcohol may download the Lyft app to their phones, then enter the 757 Sober Ride code in the app’s “Payment” tab (under the “Add Lyft Pass” option) to receive their no-cost (up to $15) safe transportation home.   DSHR’s 2023 Halloween Weekend 757 Sober Ride promo code will be posted at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, October 27th, at  It can be used only during the above stated period for rides originating from or having a destination within Hampton Roads.  Subject to Lyft’s Terms of Service.  Valid while supplies last.

In Hampton Roads, there were 274 alcohol-related fatalities in 2022, a 10.9% increase over 2021.*  In an effort to reduce injuries and fatalities in Hampton Roads, DSHR partners with Lyft.  Sponsors of DSHR’s 2023-24 757 Sober Ride campaign include the Christopher King Foundation and the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.

“On average, a DUI can set you back $10,000 in attorney’s fees, fines, court costs, lost time at work, higher insurance rates, car towing, and more.**  Drinking and driving is a risk no one should take.  If you feel different, you will drive differently.  Be smart, plan ahead, and use 757 Sober Ride to get home safely.  The life you save may be your own, or someone you love.” said Jonathan Turner, 757 Sober Ride Chairperson.  The program is patterned after the highly successful, award-winning SoberRide® program conducted by the non-profit Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP).

Drive Safe Hampton Roads (DSHR) is a non-profit regional coalition whose goal is to increase the community's involvement and awareness of traffic safety issues.  For over 34 years, Drive Safe Hampton Roads has been dedicated to preventing crashes, injuries, and fatalities on the region’s roadways.
