Mr. John T. Hanna

It is with a very sad heart that we notify the Drive Safe HR membership that Mr. John T. Hanna passed away last week.

In 1991, Concerned Citizens Advocating Traffic Safety (CCATS, now Drive Safe HR) instituted the JOHN T. HANNA AWARDS. Named after Mr. Hanna, Virginia’s “Father of Transportation Safety”, these awards honor those who share his dedication and commitment to improving traffic safety on Virginia’s highways.

John T. Hanna, the namesake of the awards, is widely known in the Commonwealth for his years of service dedicated to improving traffic safety in Virginia.  Mr. Hanna served as the Deputy Commissioner for Transportation Safety at the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles and worked in the traffic safety field for more than 60 years.  This awards event is held to recognize excellence in traffic safety.  Award categories include the Lifetime Safety Achievement Award, Employer Safety, Martin H. Schlosser Traffic Safety Activism Award, Impaired Driving Prevention, Law Enforcement Initiatives, Legal, Media, Occupant Protection, Public Transportation Safety, Youth Traffic Safety, and Pupil Transportation Safety.

We hope that you will join us for the 27th Hanna Awards Reception on January 30, 2019, to pay tribute to not only this year’s winners, but to Mr. Hanna himself.  Our deepest condolences go out to Mr. Hanna’s colleagues, friends, and family members.
