Plan Ahead: There’s Life After the Party (Non-Alcoholic Beverages)

Drive Safe Hampton Roads is a non-profit regional coalition whose mission is to increase the community’s involvement and awareness of traffic safety issues. This organization is made up of individuals with an interest in preventing crashes, injuries, and fatalities on our roadways.

By designating a driver and planning your celebration with safety in mind, you’ll help prevent needless alcohol-related tragedies. Here are a few tips to help you celebrate life this season:

  • Have plenty of non-alcoholic drinks available.
  • Use party games and dancing to take the focus off alcohol.
  • Serve plenty of high protein, non-salty foods with your alcoholic beverages.
  • Avoid having an open bar.
  • Stop serving alcohol early. Wind down with alcohol-free drinks.
  • Remember, only time can decrease intoxication. Coffee, exercise, or
    cold air will not have a sobering effect.
  • Take responsibility. Be the Designated Driver. Call a taxi or invite the person who has been drinking to spend the night.

People who agree not to drink alcohol so that everyone can get home safely are doing us all a favor. That’s why the Designated Driver should be treated to non-alcoholic beverages which are just as enticing as drinks with alcohol.

All recipes yield one serving unless otherwise noted.

5-Calorie Raspberry Lime Margarita Fizz


  • ice cubes
  • salt or sugar for rimming the glass, optional
  • 4 ounces Raspberry-Lime  Sparkling  Water
  • 4 ounces Sugar-Free Margarita Mix
  • 1 fresh lime, sliced thin optional for garnishing
  • fresh raspberries, optional for garnishing

DIRECTIONS:  Add ice to glass. Optionally dip a chilled glass into salt or sugar to coat the rim. Add sparkling water and margarita mix to glass. Garnish with other lime slices or raspberries.


Amelia Island Punch

from AAA Tidewater

Serves 8 - 10


  • 2 cups cold water
  • 1 packet (makes 2 quarts) lemonade flavor drink mix
  • 1 46 oz can chilled pineapple juice


DIRECTIONS:   In a punch bowl mix lemonade mix with water until the mix is dissolved. Stir in pineapple juice.  Refrigerate until chilled. Serve.



Cider, Thyme + Tonic Mocktail
from Offbeat and Inspired


  • 12 oz apple cider
  • 2 oz freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 oz thyme simple syrup*
  • 1 bottle (9.3 ounces) tonic water
  • Additional thyme and lemon slices for garnish

DIRECTIONS: Add all ingredients except tonic water to a pitcher and stir until fully incorporated. Add ice to four glasses, filling each about halfway. Divide the cider mixture evenly among the glasses. Top with tonic water. Stir gently. Garnish with a sprig of thyme and enjoy!

*Thyme Simple Syrup


  • ½  cup granulated
  • ½  cup water
  • 2-3 sprigs of fresh thyme

DIRECTIONS: Add all ingredients to a small saucepan. Turn heat to low and stir until sugar dissolves.  Simmer an additional 5 minutes, or until syrup coats the back of a spoon.Remove from heat.  Take out the thyme sprigs and allow syrup to cool completely before using.  Store leftover syrup in a jar in the fridge for up to 2-3 weeks.


Cran-Raspberry Martini


  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 cup raspberry flavored sparkling water
  • A splash of all-natural cranberry juice or cranberry juice cocktail
  • 1 tablespoon crushed raspberries

DIRECTIONS:  Pour first three ingredients into a martini glass, then slide a few raspberries onto a thin stirrer to garnish.


Designated Driver’s Delight

  • 2 ½ oz. orange juice
  • 1 ¼ oz. pineapple juice
  • 2 scoops vanilla ice cream
  • 1 ¼ oz. cranberry juice
  • ¾ oz. frozen strawberries

DIRECTIONS:  Mix in blender until smooth. Serve in a hurricane glass with orange slice and a strawberry.


Dirty Dr. Pepper
from Pretty Providence


  • 1 lime
  • Dr. Pepper or Diet Dr. Pepper
  • Torani Sugar Free Coconut Syrup
  • Ice

DIRECTIONS: Throw a few ice cubes into your cup and add one slice of lime. Pour in Dr. Pepper and add about 1 teaspoon of coconut syrup for every 1 cup of Dr. Pepper.


Faux-ito (Mojito mocktail)


  • Ice
  • 6 to 10 fresh mint leaves, rinsed and dried
  • 2 ounces fresh lime juice
  • 1 teaspoon powdered sugar
  • 4 ounces club soda
  • Lime wedges for garnish

DIRECTIONS: In a rocks glass, muddle mint leaves, lime juice and sugar until sugar is dissolved and mint is fragrant. Add ice. Pour in club soda. Garnish with lime.


Frost Bite Faux-tini


  • 1 oz lime juice
  • 1 oz pineapple juice
  • 2 oz white grape juice
  • fresh mint leaves
  • fresh blueberries
  • 3 oz. lemon lime soda

DIRECTIONS:  Mix lime juice and pineapple juice, and add white grape juice, mint and blueberries.  Using the back of a spoon, crush a couple of the blueberries.  Mix all ingredients well and strain into a large glass filled with ice. Top with lemon-lime soda.


Good Morning Sunburst


  • ½ cup orange juice, frozen into ice cubes
  • 8 ounces sparkling water
  • 1 splash non-alcoholic grenadine  syrup
  • 1 splash vanilla syrup (optional)
  • 1 sprig rosemary

DIRECTIONS:  Place two orange juice ice cubes into a 12-ounce glass. Add in sparkling water, then slowly pour in the grenadine syrup. If you like, slowly pour in the vanilla syrup. Serve with a sprig of rosemary and a straw.


Hot Buttered Spiced Cider

Serves: 8 - 10


  • ½ gallon apple cider
  • ½ cup fresh lemon juice, plus 1 strip of zest
  • ½ cup fresh orange juice, plus 1 strip of zest
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, softened


DIRECTIONS:  In a large pot, combine the cider, lemon juice, Orange juice, cinnamon sticks and cloves.  Simmer over medium heat for  20 minutes, not allowing to boil.  Ladle the cider into mugs, leaving the zest, cinnamon sticks and cloves in the pot.  Add about 1/2 teaspoon butter to each mug.  Serve with candy sticks or cinnamon sticks, if desired.


Jogger’s Nog

2 - 10 oz. servings


  • 1 ½ cups pineapple juice (chilled)
  • ½ cup plain yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 6 ice cubes

DIRECTIONS: Combine ingredients in blender container.  Cover and run on high until well blended.  Serve in chilled glasses.


Jingle-Jangle Holiday Punch



  • 4 cups cranberry juice
    2 cups pineapple juice
    2 cups orange juice
    lemon-lime soda or sparkling water, optional
    sugar for glass rims

DIRECTIONS:  Stir juices together in a pitcher with ice.  Dip damp edge of glasses into sugar, if desired. Pour into glasses and serve.


Mistletoe Mocktini



  • 1 ½ cups water
  • 1 bag cranberry tea
  • ½ cup orange juice
  • 2 tsp lemon juice
  • 2 cup Welch's Cranberry Sparkling Cocktail

DIRECTIONS:  Microwave water on high for 2 minutes in a microwave safe dish. Add the tea and steep for 5 minutes. Cool completely.    Mix together chilled cranberry tea, orange juice, lemon juice and Welch's Cranberry Sparkling Cocktail.


No-Hangover Pomegranate-Apple Rossini


  • 1 ounce chilled POMwonderful or other pomegranate juice
  • 5 ounces chilled sparkling apple cider.
  • Lemon twist for garnish

DIRECTIONS:  Pour apple cider into champagne flute. Gently pour pomegranate juice over the back of a spoon onto the surface of the cider. The juice should linger at the top, moving down to color the rest of the drink slowly. Garnish with lemon.


Piña Colada


  • 6 oz. fresh pineapple juice
  • 2 oz. coconut cream
  • 1 cup ice (crushed)

DIRECTIONS:  Get a load of Mexican goodness by taking your piña colada to the next level. Take the light rum out and combine fresh pineapple juice, coconut cream, and crushed ice in a cocktail glass. Mix well and top off with a slice of fresh pineapple. Use a uniquely shaped straw to sip the creamy goodness.


Pineapple-Passion Lemonade

Serves 3 to 4


  • 4 cups passion fruit juice
  • 4 cups store-bought or homemade lemonade
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 3 cups fresh or canned pineapple chunks
  • 1 pint fresh strawberries, rinsed, hulled and frozen overnight
  • Lemon slices for garnish

DIRECTIONS:  In a large pitcher or bowl, combine pineapple and passion fruit juice. Cover and let chill for at least 2 hours. Remove from refrigerator. Add in strawberries and lemonade. Serve over ice with lemon slices.


Red Delicious Punch

  • 2 bottles of non-alcoholic sparkling cider
  • 1 quart of cranberry juice
  • 1 frozen ice ring 

DIRECTIONS: Pour 2 bottles of non-alcoholic sparkling cider into a punch bowl. Mix in one quart of cranberry juice. Float a frozen ice ring and garnish with sprigs of min


Sparkling Sugar Plum Holiday Punch


  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen cranberries
  • 1 cup red grapes
  • 2 plums, sliced
  • 2 bottles Welch's Sparkling White Grape Juice, chilled
  • 4 cups cranberry juice
  • ⅓ cup lime juice


DIRECTIONS: Place the sugar in a shallow dish. Beat the egg whites until frothy. Dip the cranberries and grapes in the egg whites and shake off the excess; roll in the sugar. Arrange coated fruit on a wire rack to dry for at least 1 hour. Skewer cranberries, grapes and sliced plums on decorative cocktail picks.  Stir the Sparkling white grape juice with the cranberry juice and lime juice in a pitcher or punch bowl. Serve over ice and garnish with cocktail picks.


Sparkling Virgin Cosmo


  • Ice
  • 2 ounces cranberry juice
  • 1 ounce fresh lime juice
  • 5 ounces club soda or seltzer
  • Lime wedges for garnish
  • Sugar for frosting (optional)


DIRECTIONS:  Pour ice into a shaker or tall glass. Add cranberry juice, fresh lime juice and club soda. Shake to combine. Run a lime wedge over the outside rim of a chilled martini glass. Pour sugar onto a small plate or flat surface. Dip the rim of the glass into sugar until covered with a thin border. Strain carefully into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with lime.


The Divine Unwine
from Drive Safe HR  


  • 4 oz chilled white grape juice
  • 1 tablespoon non-alcoholic grenadine syrup.
  • 4 oz raspberry ginger ale


DIRECTIONS:  For each serving, fill a large wine glass half-way with chilled white grape juice.  Stir in non-alcoholic grenadine syrup.  Then fill with cold raspberry ginger ale.


The Enforcer

  • Fresh brewed coffee
  • Sugar cubes
  • Whipped cream
  • Cinnamon
  • Chocolate sprinkles

DIRECTIONS:  Pour coffee into a mug and stir in 2 sugar cubes and a dash of cinnamon. Top with the whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles


The Vintage Crush 

Serves: 4


  • 4 ounces orange juice
  • 4 ounces sweet and sour mix
  • 4 ounces pina colada mix
  • 3 slices banana
  • 6 strawberries
  • 4 ounces grenadine


DIRECTIONS:  For a fruity taste: fill up blender with ice and add all ingredients. Blend until thick. Top off with a splash of cranberry juice. If too thin, add more ice. 


Tornado Twist

  • 4 ounces Cranberry Raspberry 100% Juice (or Cranberry Pomegranate 100% Juice)
  • 4 ounces Lemon-Lime Soda
  • Lime, sliced so each glass gets a rim slice

DIRECTIONS:  In glasses pour Cranberry Juice and Lemon-Lime Soda over ice and serve.


Virgin White Sangria

Serves 3 to 4


  • 3 cups Ceres “Secrets of the Valley” juice, or white grape juice
  • 1 bottle sparkling apple cider
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 apple, cubed
  • 1 cup fresh or canned pineapple chunks, juices drained
  • 1 orange, sliced thin
  • 2 drops vanilla extract
  • Ice
  • Extra fruit for garnish

DIRECTIONS:  In a large pitcher or punch bowl, combine juice, cut fruit and vanilla extract. Cover and let chill for at least 2 hours. Remove from refrigerator. Add in sparkling cider.  Serve in wine glasses or champagne flutes with plenty of ice and fruit for garnish.
