757 Sober Ride
In an effort to reduce injuries and fatalities in Hampton Roads, rides are being offered to impaired drivers during specific holidays throughout the year. 757 Sober Ride operates on Sunday for The Big Game (February), St. Patrick’s Day, Cinco De Mayo, Memorial Day, the 4th of July holiday, Halloween, Thanksgiving Eve, and New Year’s Eve. 757 Sober Ride has expanded to include all cities in the Southside and Peninsula Hampton Roads area. The program is patterned after the award-winning SoberRide® program conducted by the non-profit Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP).
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2021, one person was killed every 39 minutes in a drunk-driving crash and there were 13,384 alcohol impaired fatalities.
“It is critical that anyone heading out to a bar or party plan for a sober driver to see them home safely,” said Bob Clinebell, president of Drive Safe Hampton Roads. “If you have plans on your calendar, make smart choices and plan how you are going to get home safely once the celebration ends. Plan ahead for a sober ride. Driving drunk is deadly, and no one should ever take that risk.
“Impaired Driving can come with a huge cost. Your freedom, a loved one or someone else’s loved one” said Brian Hennessy, Chairperson of DSHR’s Impaired Driving Prevention committee. “Make the right choice by choosing 757 Sober Ride or allow a designated sober driver to take you home safely without any incidents.”
In an effort to reduce injuries and fatalities in Hampton Roads, DSHR partners with Lyft to promote the 757 Sober Ride campaign for rides. Financial support of Drive Safe Hampton Roads’ 757 Sober Ride campaign comes from Huffman & Huffman Brothers-in-Law, and the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.
