| | | UPDATE: CHILD SAFETY SEAT ROUND-UP |
| Plans for the 2025 Old, Used, Borrowed and Abused Child Safety Seat Round-Up are underway. For over 36 years, Drive Safe Hampton Roads has joined forces with community partners to collect old, used and potentially unsafe child safety seats during the Child Safety Seat Round-Up program. This program also serves to educate parents and caregivers about the possible dangers of using car seats past the date recommended by the manufacturer, using secondhand seats, and seats with missing parts or no traceable recall information. According to the National Highway Safety Administration, of the 25,420 passenger vehicle occupants killed in 2022 in traffic crashes, 756 (3%) were children. Of these 756 child passenger vehicle occupants killed in traffic crashes, restraint use was known for 675, of whom 266 (39%) were unrestrained. An estimated 156,502 children were injured in traffic crashes. Drive Safe Hampton Roads thanks our longtime partners: Walmart, AAA Tidewater Virginia, Hoffman Beverage Co., Waste Management of Virginia, and the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters for helping us collect a cumulative total of 18,809 seats since 1998. We have an additional sponsor this year, Huffman & Huffman, Brothers-in Law. Huffman & Huffman stepped up to fund part of the Round-Up “Bounty”. THANK YOU! |
| | 757 SOBER RIDE CAMPAIGNS THROUGH THE END OF 2024 |
| Winter is upon us with cooler temperatures. Thanksgiving is next week with basketball season in full swing. Christmas is around the corner with snow expected before the New Year. Remember to drive carefully this Holiday season. Engaging in risky driving behaviors such as speeding, texting, driving while drowsy or distracted, or driving under the influence of legal, illegal drugs or alcohol significantly increases the risk of a collision. Remember to stay alert! Follow speed limits, keep your smartphone out of reach, and only drive when sober. Drunk-driving-related crashes spike during the Thanksgiving holiday season. From 2018 to 2022, 479 drivers were involved in fatal crashes on Thanksgiving Eve (6 p.m. to 5:59 a.m.), 143 were alcohol impaired (BAC of .08 or higher). In 2022 alone, 35 drivers were alcohol-impaired in fatal crashes on Thanksgiving Eve. Remember that Drive Safe Hampton Roads offers 757 Sober Ride, 🚙(FREE/reduced fare) powered by Lyft to get you home safely. According to NHTSA, the increasing threat of drivers combining both marijuana and alcohol leads to greater impairment and a greater risk of getting into a crash. The next campaigns are Blackout Wednesday and New Year’s Eve. There have been a total of 3,204 rides over 22 holidays. This is amazing! Supporters of 757 Sober Ride campaign include Huffman & Huffman Brothers-in-Law, the Christopher King Foundation, and the Virginia DMV. Their funding allows us to offer more safe rides home. THANK YOU!! |
