Kudos to Dean Godwin and the Regional Commercial Motor Vehicle Leos

The Suffolk Police Department Motor Carrier Unit joined with other Hampton Roads law enforcement agencies to conduct a regional inspection of trucks and large vehicles. This initiative is referred to as the Specialized Transportation Safety Committee of Drive Safe Hampton Roads. The inspections performed by this group are performed monthly and ensure that all trucks and motor carriers are abiding by strict rules that are designed to protect motorists and local infrastructure and roadways.

This month, the Safety Committee conducted a total of 46 inspections which resulted in the identification of 76 vehicle violations, 45 DMV IRIS brake checks, 7 vehicles that were put out of service until repairs could be completed, 2 size/weight violations, 1 driver that was disqualified from driving, and 1 overweight citation. Citations from these inspections result in revenue that is disbursed to the City by the Virginia DMV.

Officer Godwin is a member of the SPD Motor Carrier Unit and has been on the team for over 5 years; he originally began his career in law enforcement with SPD in 1976 before transferring to the Virginia Beach Police Department as a Fatal Crash Team Investigator and Motor Carrier Safety Officer. Officer Godwin returned to the Suffolk Police Department as a part time Motor Carrier Officer in 2016 and has performed a valuable service to our community as he conducts inspections and helps keep our roadways safe.

Thank you to the officers in our SPD Motor Carrier Unit for devoting their time to keeping our drivers and roadways safe!
