2022 John T. Hanna Award Winners Announced

Drive Safe Hampton Roads presented the

Annual John T. Hanna Awards for Excellence in Traffic Safety

Hampton Roads, Va. (February 2023) - The annual John T. Hanna Awards, presented by Drive Safe Hampton Roads, recognized twelve local individuals and groups for outstanding performance in the area of traffic safety. This year’s recipients included MileOne Cares/ Hall Toyota Virginia Beach, Dwight Jenkins of the Highway Safety Office, Virginia Beach police officers and fire department personnel, a non-profit organization, a Chesapeake public school teacher, an attorney’s office, and Janet Brooking, the executive director of DRIVE SMART Virginia.

Drive Safe Hampton Roads is a regional coalition comprised of safety advocates from local law enforcement and fire safety divisions, corporations, the military, state, city and county government, and other individuals. For 35 years, Drive Safe Hampton Roads has been dedicated to preventing crashes, injuries, and fatalities on the region’s roadways.

The awards were given in the following categories: Traffic Safety Activism, Impaired Driving Prevention, Occupant Protection, Transportation Safety, Law Enforcement Initiatives, Messaging/Media, Legal Initiatives, Youth Traffic Safety and Lifetime Achievement.

The 2022 John T. Hanna Award Recipients are as follows:

Dwight Jenkins: Martin H. Schlosser Award for Traffic Safety Activism

Jessica Xenakis and Ryan Arab: Occupant Protection (Co-Winners)

Deborah Fry: Youth Traffic Safety
Virginia State Police Division V Motorcycle Unit: Transportation Safety
Huffman and Huffman, Brothers-in-Law, PLLC: Messaging/Media
Eriald Kera: Law Enforcement Initiatives (Individual Award)
Virginia Beach Police Department Motorcycle Unit: Law Enforcement Initiatives

Janet Brooking: Lifetime Achievement in Traffic Safety

John T. Hanna, the namesake of the awards, is widely known in the Commonwealth for his years of service dedicated to improving traffic safety in Virginia. Hanna served as the Deputy Commissioner for Transportation Safety at the state Department of Motor Vehicles and worked in the traffic safety field for more than 60 years.
